Huangguan (Crown) Escalator is located in Yuzhong District, Chongqing. As a distinctive transportation facility in Chongqing, it embodies the unique characteristics of the "mountain city". The escalator has a total length of 112 meters, a width of 1.3 meters, a lifting height of 52.7 meters, an inclination angle of 30 degrees, and an operating speed of 0.75 meters per second. The entire ride takes approximately 2 minutes and 30 seconds. It consists of three escalators: an upward escalator, a downward escalator, and a standby escalator. With a maximum one-way passenger capacity of 13,000 people per hour, it is the second longest single-stage inclined escalator in Asia. The Huangguan Enterprise Building, where the escalator is located, covers a land area of 3,036 square meters and has a total construction area of 34,810 square meters.
History and Culture
The construction of Huangguan Escalator is closely related to the special terrain of Chongqing, known as the "mountain city". In the early 1990s, the area from Lianglukou to Caiyuanba in Yuzhong District had a steep terrain (with a vertical height difference of over 50 meters) and was only connected by stone steps and small ramps, making travel for residents and transportation of goods extremely inconvenient. In particular, the passenger flow at Caiyuanba Railway Station (an important railway hub in Chongqing at that time) continued to grow, which further worsened traffic congestion in the area. To solve this livelihood problem, the urban planning department of Chongqing proposed a plan to build a "large-scale inclined escalator", aiming to shorten the travel time between the two places and improve local transportation conditions through vertical transportation facilities.
Construction of Huangguan Escalator started in February 1993, and it was completed and put into operation on February 18, 1996. It is not only a transportation facility but also a carrier of Chongqing's urban memories and cultural characteristics. It has attracted many tourists to experience it and has become a popular check-in spot for tourism in Chongqing.
