Pudong Art Museum (MAP MUSEUM) is located at No. 2777 Binjiang Avenue, Lujiazui, Pudong New Area, Shanghai. Situated in the core area of Lujiazui and facing the Bund directly, it is a key cultural project invested and constructed by Shanghai Lujiazui Group Co., Ltd. As an important cultural landmark in Shanghai, Pudong Art Museum is positioned as "an important platform for international art exhibition and exchange, an important carrier of Shanghai's international cultural metropolis, and an important benchmark for cultural construction in Lujiazui Financial City". It focuses on modern and contemporary art exhibitions, also has the function of displaying cultural relics and artworks, and centers on five core functions: exhibition, collection, research, public education and international exchange. The building of the art museum is designed by the renowned French architect Jean Nouvel, with a total construction area of approximately 40,590 square meters, including about 30,300 square meters above ground and 10,290 square meters underground, covering a total area of around 13,700 square meters. The overall building adopts a concise geometric shape, with white as the main color, matched with glass curtain walls and stone facades. It not only reflects a modern and minimalist artistic style, but also forms a harmonious echo with the urban skyline of Lujiazui. The museum houses multiple exhibition halls of different specifications, lecture halls, cultural and creative stores, art bookstores and viewing spaces, making it a modern art museum integrating art display, cultural exchange and public experience.
History and Culture
The birth of Pudong Art Museum is an important measure for Shanghai to promote the construction of an international cultural metropolis, and also a key layout for Lujiazui to transform from a "financial center" to a dual-drive development of "culture + finance". The construction of Pudong Art Museum officially started in 2017. After four years of elaborate construction, it was officially opened to the public on July 8, 2021, filling the gap of large-scale professional art museums in the core area of Lujiazui.
As a young art museum, Pudong Art Museum has adhered to the positioning of "a bridge for cultural exchange between China and the West" since its inception. Relying on Shanghai's international advantages, it has established in-depth cooperation with top art institutions around the world. At the beginning of its opening, it reached a three-year strategic cooperation with the Tate Gallery, launching a series of high-profile exhibitions. These exhibitions not only introduced classic international art works, but also displayed excellent achievements of Chinese contemporary art, making it an important window for cultural exchange between China and foreign countries. The building itself also carries the concept of "symbiosis between art and the city". Jean Nouvel made full use of the landscape resources of the Huangpu River in his design, and implemented the design concept of "seeing and being seen" throughout, making the art museum not only a space for art display, but also a part of the urban landscape, reflecting the in-depth integration of contemporary architecture with urban culture and natural landscape.
