The Shanghai Bund Sightseeing Tunnel is situated between Huangpu District and Pudong New Area in Shanghai, starting from No. 300 The Bund, East Zhongshan 1st Road, Huangpu District (north of Chen Yi Square on the Bund) in the south and ending at No. 2789 Binjiang Avenue, Pudong New Area (west of the Oriental Pearl Radio & TV Tower) in the north. It is Shanghai's first cross-river pedestrian tunnel under the Huangpu River. Featuring a unique cross-river mode and immersive light and shadow experience, the tunnel is different from traditional traffic tunnels and combines both transportation functions and sightseeing value. With a total length of about 647 meters and an inner diameter of 6.7 meters, the tunnel has an underground main structure and covers a total area of about 12,000 square meters. The traffic track inside the tunnel is a single line for two-way traffic, and the whole journey takes about 2 to 5 minutes (including the light and shadow experience). As a distinctive passage connecting the two core areas of the Bund and Lujiazui, it integrates transportation with cultural and tourism experience, becoming a highly recognizable feature in Shanghai's urban tourism.
History and Culture
The construction of the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel was driven by the growing demand for linkage between the Bund and Lujiazui after the development and opening up of Pudong in Shanghai. In the 1990s, to ease the traffic pressure of pedestrians crossing the Huangpu River and enrich the forms of Shanghai's tourism products, Shanghai launched the construction project of the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel. Constructed by Shanghai Urban Construction Group and other units, the tunnel started construction in 1998 and officially opened to the public on October 1, 2000, becoming the first sightseeing tunnel specially designed for pedestrians under the Huangpu River in Shanghai at that time.
Culturally, the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel has witnessed the development of the integration of Shanghai's urban transportation with culture and tourism. It breaks the mode of traditional cross-river tunnels that only focus on transportation functions, integrating light and shadow art, sound effects with urban transportation, and has become an important part of Shanghai's "One River and One Creek" cultural and tourism brand. The design of the tunnel combines modern technology with Shanghai's urban culture, and its internal light and shadow scenes are constantly updated, always keeping in line with Shanghai's fashionable and innovative urban temperament, making it a unique window for Chinese and foreign tourists to understand Shanghai's urban development and urban culture.
Main Attractions
The Bund Sightseeing Tunnel (Main Tunnel)
The core attraction of the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel is the tunnel itself, which is located about 30 meters under the Huangpu River. The inner wall of the tunnel is made of special fire and water resistant materials. The sightseeing trains in the tunnel are unmanned rubber-tyred trains with fully transparent glass carriages, allowing tourists to enjoy the light and shadow special effects in the tunnel throughout the journey. The light and shadow landscapes in the tunnel are divided into several themed areas such as "Time Tunnel", "Starry Sky Walk" and "Deep Sea Exploration". Through LED lights, laser effects, dynamic projection and other technologies, an immersive visual experience is created, and the whole light and shadow experience takes about 3 minutes, which is the core tourist content of the scenic area.
The Bund Entrance/Exit (Huangpu District)
The Bund Entrance/Exit of the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel is located at No. 300 The Bund, East Zhongshan 1st Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai (north of Chen Yi Square on the Bund), close to the Bund International Architecture Exhibition Complex. The building of the entrance/exit adopts a modern minimalist style, forming a sharp contrast with the historical buildings on the Bund, with a construction area of about 800 square meters. Supporting facilities such as a tourist service center and cultural and creative stores are available around the entrance/exit. Tourists entering the tunnel from here can first experience the historical style of the Bund and then the modern technology of the tunnel.
Lujiazui Entrance/Exit (Pudong New Area)
The Lujiazui Entrance/Exit is located at No. 2789 Binjiang Avenue, Pudong New Area, Shanghai, adjacent to landmark buildings in Lujiazui such as the Oriental Pearl Radio & TV Tower and the Shanghai World Financial Center, with a construction area of about 1,000 square meters. This entrance/exit is connected to the Binjiang area of Lujiazui, and tourists can directly visit the urban landscape of Lujiazui after exiting the tunnel. There is a viewing platform around the entrance/exit, where tourists can watch the scenery of the Huangpu River and the Bund at close range, making it an important node connecting the two core scenic areas.
