History and Culture
Yangliuqing Town, where Yangliuqing Manor is located, is a famous historical and cultural town in China with a history of thousands of years. It is especially famous for Yangliuqing woodblock New Year paintings and is known as "the hometown of Chinese woodblock New Year paintings". Yangliuqing woodblock New Year paintings originated in the Chongzhen period of the Ming Dynasty and flourished in the Qing Dynasty. Together with Suzhou Taohuawu New Year paintings, they are called "South Taohuawu and North Yangliuqing". In 2006, they were included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage lists.
During the construction of the manor, it was deeply integrated with the local historical culture of Yangliuqing, especially the New Year painting culture. The folk custom exhibition area in the manor systematically presents the development history, production techniques (such as the five processes of "drawing, carving, printing, painting, and mounting") and classic works (such as Surplus Year after Year and Five Sons Snatching Lotus) of Yangliuqing woodblock New Year paintings. In addition, as an important ancient town along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, Yangliuqing Town was once a major canal transportation hub. Some landscapes in the manor also draw on elements of canal culture, allowing tourists to feel the integration of local canal transportation history and folk culture through scene restoration and physical displays.
