Shanghai Auto Museum is located at No. 7565 Boyuan Road, Anting, Jiading District, Shanghai. It is the first professional automobile museum in China. Adhering to the mission of "Promoting Auto Culture, Showcasing Auto Charm", the museum integrates automobile exhibition, science education, cultural exchange and recreation. It is one of the largest, best-collected and most advanced automobile-themed museums in China. Designed by IFB Germany Architects, the museum covers a total floor area of about 28,000 square meters and an exhibition area of about 10,000 square meters. With a streamlined exterior resembling stacked "auto parts", the building features a strong modern and industrial aesthetic. The museum houses hundreds of precious classic vintage cars, representing different eras and brands from the birth of the automobile to the present, systematically displaying a century of automotive development. Combined with multimedia and interactive experiences, visitors can fully explore automotive technology, culture and history.
History and Culture
Preparation for Shanghai Auto Museum began in 2001, led by Shanghai International Automobile City (Group) Co., Ltd., aiming to fill the gap of professional automobile museums in China and inherit and promote auto culture. On January 17, 2006, Shanghai Auto Museum officially opened to the public, becoming one of the core landmarks of Shanghai International Automobile City and marking a new stage of professional and systematic auto culture communication in China.
Built over more than ten years, the museum's collection covers classic models from the United States, Germany, Britain, France, Italy, Japan and other countries, spanning from the 1900 Peugeot Type 28 to modern new energy concept cars, outlining the evolution of automobiles from invention to popularization and from fuel to electric power. These collections are not only industrial products but also reflections of society, economy, technology and art in different eras. For example, the 1934 Packard Twelve in the collection shows the design aesthetics of high-end automobiles during the U.S. Great Depression and the industrial manufacturing level of that time; the classic domestic model Shanghai SH760 witnesses the start and development of China's independent automobile industry.
In addition to static displays, Shanghai Auto Museum continuously explores the cultural connotation behind automobiles. Through thematic exhibitions, auto culture salons, youth science activities and more, it integrates knowledge of automotive technology, design art and transportation development into public experience, serving as an important bridge between the auto industry and the public.
