Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street is situated in Siming District, Xiamen City, Fujian Province. It stands as one of Xiamen’s most time-honored commercial streets and urban landmarks. Centered on arcade architecture, this pedestrian precinct ranks among China’s largest and best-preserved arcade commercial blocks, blending Southeast Asian charm with Minnan local features. Integrating shopping, catering, leisure, cultural tourism and sightseeing, it serves as a symbolic urban block combining commerce and historical heritage. The main stretch of Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street spans roughly 1.2 kilometers, covering a total block area of about 230,000 square meters with over one thousand shops lining its sides. It is among Xiamen’s busiest commercial districts with the most vibrant business atmosphere.
History and Culture
Zhongshan Road broke ground in 1925 under the original name Zhonghua Road, a landmark achievement of Xiamen’s early modern urban planning and construction, and grew into the city’s core commercial artery upon completion. Renamed Zhongshan Road in 1928 to honor Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the thoroughfare has witnessed Xiamen’s full transformation from a modern trading port into a contemporary tourist city.
The block’s signature arcade buildings merge traditional Minnan dwellings, Southeast Asian colonial styles and Western classical architectural elements. They embody the overseas Chinese culture and maritime trading heritage, forming a vital historic icon of Xiamen as a hometown of overseas Chinese. For much of modern history, Zhongshan Road functioned as Xiamen’s core hub for commerce, finance and culture, home to numerous time-honored stores, traditional merchants and folk handicraft outlets that preserve Xiamen’s indigenous customs, food culture and trading traditions.
Since the start of the 21st century, Zhongshan Road has undergone multiple protective renovations and industrial upgrades. While retaining its historic appearance, the block has incorporated modern commercial functions, evolving into a key platform for inheriting local history and boosting urban tourism, as well as a representative district where Minnan culture, overseas Chinese culture and maritime culture converge.
Main Attractions
Arcade Building Complex
Running along the full length of the main street, the arcade complex forms the core landscape of Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street. Most buildings stand two to four stories high with connected covered corridors designed to shield pedestrians from sun and rain, marking a distinctive fusion of Southeast Asian and Minnan architectural styles. Well preserved in its Republican-era facade with delicate exterior decorations, the complex balances practicality and ornamental value and counts among China’s finest intact modern arcade blocks.
China City
Nestled in the central section of Zhongshan Road, China City is the largest modern commercial complex within the block. It adopts classic arcade exterior design while housing comprehensive shopping, dining, entertainment and cultural creativity facilities, acting as a benchmark blending historic streetscape with modern commerce and an indispensable stop on Zhongshan Road.
Huang Zehe Peanut Soup Shop
A time-honored local eatery lining Zhongshan Road founded in 1949, Huang Zehe Peanut Soup Shop specializes in classic Minnan snacks including peanut soup, chives pancake and fried jujube cake. It represents Xiamen’s traditional food culture on Zhongshan Road and remains hugely popular among local residents and travelers.
Jukou Street
A branch pedestrian alley stretching roughly 200 meters off Zhongshan Road, Jukou Street is lined with stalls selling authentic Minnan snacks, cultural and creative gadgets and folk handcrafts. Its narrow lanes carry a strong down-to-earth market vibe, making it the most atmospheric side street of Zhongshan Road.
Footpath to Nanputuo Temple
Located on the eastern end of Zhongshan Road, this dedicated pedestrian path directly links the block to Nanputuo Temple and Xiamen University. Serving as a vital transit connector between the historic commercial district and cultural scenic spots, it enables seamless multi-site sightseeing for tourists.
