History and Culture

Sanqing Mountain gets its name because its three peaks—Yujing, Yuxu, and Yuhua—resemble the three revered gods of Taoism (Yuqing Yuan Shi Tianzun, Shangqing Lingbao Tianzun, and Taiqing Daode Tianzun) sitting atop them. Taoist culture has been passed down here for over 1600 years. During the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Ge Hong, a famous Taoist theorist, practiced alchemy and Taoism here, laying the foundation for the Taoist culture of Sanqing Mountain. During the Tang and Song dynasties, Taoist activities flourished, gradually forming a Taoist architectural system centered on Sanqing Palace.

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Taoism in Sanqing Mountain reached its peak, with a large number of temples, pavilions, and stone carvings built. There are more than 50 existing ancient buildings and over 230 stone inscriptions. Among them, Sanqing Palace, first built in the Western Jin Dynasty and rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty, covers an area of about 500 square meters and is one of the best-preserved ancient Taoist architectural complexes in the Jiangnan region. These buildings are built according to the mountain terrain, cleverly integrating with the natural landscape, embodying the Taoist concept of "harmony between man and nature". In addition, the cliff carvings and Taoist myths and legends in the scenic area together form a rich Taoist cultural heritage, making it an important carrier for studying Chinese Taoist culture.
