Located in Donghai Wonderland Scenic Area, Liushui Town, Pingtan County, Fuzhou City, Fujian Province, Immortal Well is a national 4A-level tourist attraction and one of the most representative sea-eroded landform landscapes in Pingtan. As a natural sea-eroded vertical shaft formed by millions of years of wave erosion and weathering, it serves as the core landmark of Donghai Wonderland. It has a wellhead diameter of about 33 meters and a depth of about 47 meters, featuring a steep cylindrical wall with three natural sea-eroded openings at the bottom connecting directly to the East China Sea. Covering a total area of approximately 2.88 square kilometers, the scenic area is famous for its peculiar sea-eroded landforms, magnificent coastal scenery and original coastal views. It integrates natural sightseeing, geological popular science, photography and coastal leisure functions, ranking among the core scenic spots of Pingtan International Tourism Island.
History and Culture
The name Immortal Well derives from local folk legends. It is said that the Eight Immortals once traveled to Pingtan sea area to rest and refine elixirs here, leaving footprints of immortals in the well, hence the name. The surrounding area is collectively known as Donghai Wonderland. In the traditional culture of local fishermen in Pingtan, Immortal Well is regarded as a sacred place for praying for peace. Fishermen would overlook the well to pray for calm seas and abundant catches before going fishing, a custom that has been preserved to this day.
Geologically speaking, Immortal Well took shape in the Cretaceous period about 130 million years ago and belongs to volcanic tuff landform. It is the most typical and well-preserved sea-eroded vertical shaft landscape along the southeast coast of China, boasting high geological research value and hailed as a Museum of Sea-eroded Landforms by geological experts. In modern times, its unique natural scenery has made it a popular creation resort for literati, painters and photography enthusiasts, as well as an important carrier of Pingtan marine culture and folk customs.
Main Scenic Spots
Immortal Well
As the core landscape of the scenic area, it is a natural cylindrical sea-eroded vertical shaft with a wellhead diameter of 33 meters and a depth of 47 meters. Its walls are made of gray-brown volcanic tuff with steep and smooth rock surfaces. Three natural sea-eroded passages at the bottom link to the East China Sea. During high tide, surging waves rush into the well, creating spectacular roaring tides with echoing sounds. At low tide, visitors can get close to observe reefs and tide traces at the bottom. It is the ideal spot to admire sea-eroded wonders, listen to tide sounds and take photos.
Immortal Peak
Situated to the east of Immortal Well, it is a 28-meter-high sea-eroded pillar standing independently by the coastline. It gains its name for its tall and straight shape resembling a standing immortal. Made of volcanic tuff, it has formed a unique columnar shape after long-term wave impact and weathering. Standing opposite to Immortal Well, it is one of the symbolic landscapes of Donghai Wonderland.
Immortal Valley
It is a natural sea-eroded canyon connecting Immortal Well and the seaside, with a total length of about 120 meters, a width ranging from 3 to 8 meters and rock walls around 30 meters high on both sides. The narrow and deep canyon will be flooded by seawater during high tide, forming a stunning surge tide scene. Walking inside, tourists can fully feel the shocking charm of coastal geological wonders.
Immortal Platform
Located on the top viewing platform of Immortal Well, it covers an area of about 150 square meters. It is the best place to overlook the full view of Immortal Well and overlook the East China Sea. With broad vision, visitors can have a panoramic view of Immortal Well, Immortal Peak, coastline and distant islands, making it a core check-in and photography spot for tourists.

Travel Suggestions
- The recommended visiting duration is 1 to 1.5 hours. Core attractions are concentrated and easy to reach on foot.
- The best visiting time is high tide period. Check the Pingtan tide schedule in advance to enjoy the magnificent scene of waves pouring into the well.
- Visit in early morning or evening for soft light perfect for seascape and landscape photography, avoiding harsh midday sunlight.
- Walk slowly along the coastal path to visit attractions in order without retracing your steps.
- Photography lovers are advised to bring wide-angle lenses to capture full views of Immortal Well and coastal scenery.
Notes
- Strong winds prevail along the coast. Stay away from cliff edges and the outer side of guardrails to prevent slipping and falling risks.
- Do not enter Immortal Valley and the bottom area of Immortal Well during high tide to avoid being trapped by seawater.
- Climbing well walls, Immortal Peak and other geological landscapes is strictly prohibited to protect natural landforms.
- Do not litter or carve graffiti in the scenic area to protect the original coastal ecological environment.
- Roads become slippery on rainy days. Wear non-slip shoes and walk cautiously.
- Minors and elderly visitors must be accompanied by family members and shall not travel alone.
Transportation
- Self-driving: Depart from Pingtan County downtown, drive north along East Ring Road for about 22 kilometers directly to the parking lot of Donghai Wonderland Scenic Area with free parking spaces available.
- Public Transport: Take Bus No.25 at Pingtan Bus Station and get off at Donghai Wonderland Stop, then walk 500 meters to reach the scenic entrance.
- Taxi & Ride-hailing: It takes about 25 minutes to travel from downtown Pingtan to the scenic spot by car.
- Electric Scooter Rental: Rent an electric scooter for a one-hour ride along the ring road and enjoy coastal views on the way.
Opening Hours
The scenic area opens from 07:30 to 18:30 in peak season from April to October, and from 08:00 to 17:30 in off-season from November to March of the next year. The opening hours may be adjusted temporarily according to tide conditions and weather changes, and the scenic area will be closed in severe weather to ensure tourist safety.
