History and Culture
With a long history, Zengcuo'an was originally a primitive fishing village along the coast of Minnan. Fishermen have settled here since the Tang and Song dynasties, making a living by fishery and aquaculture. It is one of the oldest fishing villages on Xiamen Island, retaining complete Minnan fishing folk customs after thousands of years of inheritance. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, a stable village pattern gradually took shape here. Traditional Minnan dwellings and ancestral halls were built one after another, making it an important fishing village settlement in southern Xiamen. Situated by the sea, it also served as a minor hub for coastal defense and trade, accumulating profound marine cultural heritage.
Zengcuo'an is a place where diverse religious cultures converge. There are many religious sites covering Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity and folk beliefs within its territory. The coexistence of various faiths in one village makes it a typical example of diversified religious culture in Minnan and a major cultural highlight of the scenic area. In modern times, Zengcuo'an has undergone transformation from a traditional fishing village into a literary and creative block. It keeps the original rustic charm of the old fishing village while introducing modern artistic and tourist elements, becoming a landmark of cultural transformation among Xiamen fishing villages.
As an important carrier of Minnan culture, Zengcuo'an inherits local fishing traditions, ancient architectural crafts and distinctive catering culture. It sets a fine example combining local Xiamen culture with coastal tourism, and serves as a core destination for tourists to experience authentic life in traditional Minnan fishing villages.
