The Yuyin Shanfang is located at North Street, Nancun Town, Panyu District, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province. It is a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level and a national 4A‑level tourist attraction, and one of the Four Great Classical Gardens of Guangdong. First built in the Qing Dynasty, it is a representative private Lingnan garden covering an area of 1598 square meters. The whole garden is celebrated for its compact layout and exquisite craftsmanship. Within limited space, gardening techniques integrate pavilions, terraces, towers, hills, waters, bridges, corridors, flowers and stone carvings, embodying the Lingnan gardening concept of condensing grand landscapes into a small space. A great number of Lingnan traditional crafts including brick carving, wood carving, lime sculpture and pottery sculpture are applied to buildings. It preserves abundant physical relics of Lingnan folk architectures from the Qing Dynasty and serves as an important physical site for the research on architectural arts of classical Lingnan gardens.
History and Culture
The Yuyin Shanfang was constructed under the supervision of Wu Bin in the Qing Dynasty. A native of Nancun, Panyu, Wu Bin passed the provincial imperial examination and served as Secretary of the Inner Cabinet. After resigning and returning to his hometown, he named the garden "Yuyin", meaning the blessings of ancestors passed down to descendants, in memory of his forefathers’ grace. Construction started in the 6th year of the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty and was completed in the 10th year of the Tongzhi reign after four‑year‑long work.
At the very beginning, Yuyin Shanfang was a private garden for the Wu clan, whose descendants lived here. Over centuries, the garden suffered architectural damage and component aging. In 1989, Yuyin Shanfang was listed as a Cultural Relic Protection Unit of Guangdong Province. Authorities carried out multiple rounds of renovation and conservation to retain its original architectural form and garden pattern to the maximum extent. In 2001, the State Council designated Yuyin Shanfang as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level. The garden well preserves gardening ideas of private Lingnan gardens of the Qing Dynasty. Numerous couplets and carvings inside reflect Lingnan clan culture and traditional Lingnan architectural craftsmanship.
Main Scenic Spots
Shenliu Hall
Shenliu Hall is the main hall of Yuyin Shanfang, the core building for the garden owner to receive guests and hold banquets. It is a three‑bay hall with delicate wood carvings. Partition screens made of red sandalwood and sour‑wood with carved patterns of flowers, birds and calligraphy are well‑preserved inside. A terrace lies in front of the hall facing the lotus pond. Surrounded by plants, the hall forms harmonious interplay between buildings and waterscapes and stands as a typical example of Lingnan hall architecture.
Linchí Study
Linchí Study sits on the opposite bank of the lotus pond facing Shenliu Hall across the water. It used to be a study for the garden owner to read and relax. This waterside two‑storey building opens windows towards the pond for broad views. Plants are planted around the building to create a quiet reading environment by water. Its layout reflects the waterside landscaping feature of Lingnan studies.
Linglong Waterside Pavilion (Linglong Shuixie)
The Linglong Waterside Pavilion stands in the middle of the pond on the eastern side of the garden. This octagonal waterside pavilion opens windows on eight sides and is surrounded by water. Visitors may overlook garden views from here. It was once a place for the owner to enjoy cool breeze and scenery. Aquatic plants and arbors grow around it. The building casts reflections on water and forms one of the classic sights in the garden.
Hong‑Lv Covered Bridge
The Hong‑Lv Covered Bridge spans across the central lotus pond and serves as the landmark building of Yuyin Shanfang. It divides the garden into eastern and western sections. Pomegranate trees with red blossoms grow on one side and green plantains on the other, hence the name Hong‑Lv. The covered bridge provides shelter from sun and rain. Visitors can admire lotus flowers on the pond while walking across it. It perfectly combines bridge, corridor, water and vegetation and represents a fine example of covered bridges in Lingnan gardens.
Yu Garden
Yu Garden, also known as Maidens’ Tower, is an annex courtyard of Yuyin Shanfang for female members of the Wu clan. This Lingnan residential compound consists of multi‑storey dwellings with bedrooms, studies and viewing terraces. Compact in layout, it contains patios and small courtyards, reproducing living quarters for women in wealthy Lingnan families in old times.
Wenchang Pavilion
Standing 15.4 meters high, Wenchang Pavilion features octagonal appearance. It is structured as three‑storey building visually presented as four‑storey. The caisson ceiling inside is painted with vivid figures, flowers, birds, beasts and landscapes with fine painting skills. Ceilings of corridors on both sides of Wenchang Pavilion are decorated with local‑style paintings and inspiring comic strips of Panyu, bringing visitors reflective insights after viewing.
