History and Culture
Tenglongshan has a long history. In 407 BC, Le Yang led the soldiers of the Wei State to fight against Guxu, the defender of the Zhongshan State, in Tenglongshan. During the Western Han Dynasty, Tenglongshan was called Fangshan or Tieshan. It is said that Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty stationed his troops in the camp at the foot of the mountain and ordered the construction of Wangmu Temple. During the Eastern Han Dynasty, Fangshan was under the jurisdiction of Lingshou. Emperor Guangwu Liu Xiu once led his troops to fight in Fangshan. In 86 AD, Emperor Zhang of the Han Dynasty went to Lingshou to worship Fangshan. During the Tang Dynasty, a Buddhist temple was built in Sijiazhuang in front of the mountain. During the late Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties, Tenglongshan was called Fangshan, Xishan, or Wangmushan. King Zhao Wang Rong built pavilions in Xishan taking advantage of the natural danger, and led more than 10,000 generals, assistants, and soldiers to climb the mountain and get close to the water, staying for more than a month.
During the Anti-Japanese War, revolutionary elders such as Nie Rongzhen, Deng Hua, and Wang Zhao fought and stationed in Tenglongshan. It was also the command post of the famous Chenzhuang Battle. From October to December 1943, the invading Japanese army built 5 fortresses along the ridge of Tenglongshan, as well as 109 military facilities including barracks, command posts, infirmaries, and armories, with a squadron stationed there for a long time. The military and civilians in Jinchaji fought against the Japanese army for a year and a half. In April 1945, the Japanese army was forced to retreat. These buildings and sites have become a unique historical and cultural landscape on the North China battlefield during World War II.
