Qicai Danxia Scenic Area is located in Linze County and Sunan Yugur Autonomous County, Zhangye City, Gansu Province, 40 kilometers east of Zhangye Urban Area and 20 kilometers north of Linze County Seat. As a national 5A-level tourist attraction and a Global Geopark, it covers a total area of 50 square kilometers with a core tourist zone of 4 square kilometers. It represents the most typical Danxia landform in arid northern China and stands as the country’s sole highly integrated area of Danxia landform and colorful hilly landscapes, embodying majesty, danger, wonder, seclusion, and beauty.

The scenic area is celebrated for its vibrant landform colors, interlaced strata, imposing scale, and spectacular vistas, with unmatched color richness, ornamental value, and area nationwide. It features 7 viewing areas, including Qicai Yunhai (Colorful Cloud Sea), Qicai Xianyuan (Colorful Fairyland), Qicai Jinxiu (Colorful Splendor), Qicai Hongxia (Colorful Rosy Clouds), Crouching Tiger Gorge, Qicai Aohe (Colorful Ao River), and Vientiane Tulin Valley (Myriad Forms Soil Forest Valley), along with over 30 landscapes such as Divine Dragon Frolicking in Fire, Clever Monkey Gazing at the Sea, and Monks Worshipping Buddha.

History and Culture

Linze County and Sunan Yugur Autonomous County, where Qicai Danxia Scenic Area is situated, boast a long history and profound cultural heritage. Human activities have thrived here since ancient times, witnessing the integration and development of multiple ethnic groups.

Historically, this region served as a vital passage along the Silk Road, where caravans, envoys, and monks fostered cultural and religious diversity, enriching the local heritage.

While the Qicai Danxia landscape is a natural geological formation, it holds significant place in local folklore, imbued with mysterious meanings and becoming a cultural symbol. Additionally, the area has been a filming location for renowned movies like *The Sun Also Rises* (directed by Jiang Wen) and *A Simple Noodle Story*/*The Great Wall* (directed by Zhang Yimou), enhancing its cultural prominence.

Qicai Yunhai Viewing Area (Colorful Cloud Sea)

Crouching Tiger Gorge

Classic Route: Take the sightseeing bus to Qicai Yunhai → Qicai Xianyuan → Qicai Jinxiu → Qicai Hongxia, with optional extensions to Crouching Tiger Gorge, Qicai Aohe, and Vientiane Tulin Valley.

Deep Experience Route: Join guided geological tours to undeveloped areas, or opt for aerial views via helicopter, hot air balloon, or powered paraglider to appreciate the landscape’s full grandeur.
