History and Culture
Xuan Paper is a special paper for traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting, known as the "King of Paper, Millennium Longevity Paper". It originated in Jing County, Anhui Province, with a history of more than 1,500 years. The traditional craftsmanship of making Xuan Paper began in the Tang Dynasty, and was continuously improved in the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. It was listed as a tribute in the Qing Dynasty. In 2006, it was included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage lists, and in 2009, it was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, making it an outstanding representative of traditional Chinese crafts.
China Xuan Paper Cultural Park was built on the foundation of the Xuan Paper industry in Jing County and invested by China Xuan Paper Co., Ltd. The park completely restores the whole process of ancient Xuan Paper production, retaining 108 traditional procedures, serving as a core carrier for the living inheritance of Xuan Paper craftsmanship. With the mission of protecting, inheriting and promoting Xuan Paper culture, the park connects the whole chain of Xuan Paper raw material planting, manual production, cultural exhibition and artistic creation, becoming an important link between traditional crafts and modern cultural tourism, as well as the preferred destination for Chinese and foreign tourists to understand Chinese papermaking culture.
Xuan Paper is made from green wingceltis bark and sandy rice straw as main raw materials through pure manual processes such as natural water soaking, sun drying and steaming. It features strong ink moistening, aging resistance, moth resistance and color fastness. Famous calligraphers and painters of all dynasties have used Xuan Paper as a creative carrier, carrying Chinese calligraphy and painting art, traditional culture and craftsmanship spirit, making it an important symbol of excellent traditional Chinese culture.
