Historical Culture

The history of the Yellow River Estuary area is closely linked to the changes of the Yellow River. As the "Mother River" of the Chinese nation, the estuary of the Yellow River has changed its course many times in history. The current Yellow River Delta was gradually formed after the Yellow River breached and changed its course at Tongwaxiang in 1855. It has a history of only about 160 years and is the youngest land in China.

This newly-formed land contains rich Yellow River culture. The folk customs of the Yellow River Estuary integrate Qilu culture and wetland characteristics. Intangible cultural heritages such as fishermen's chants and salt workers' living customs show the unique lifestyle formed by the local people in their coexistence with the Yellow River and the sea. In addition, this place was an important revolutionary base during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the Liberation War, leaving many footprints of revolutionary martyrs' struggles. The red culture and the Yellow River culture blend with each other, forming the unique historical and cultural heritage of the Yellow River Estuary.
